This work integrates design drawing properties in order to understand the basic rules of typology, while also allowing an exploration of the meaning of affordance. Here I have chosen to investigate the subject area of Entomology as a tool for applying sketching skills in design practice, both as recording and analysis. I have demonstrated important elements of a typology, including aesthetic representation and stylistic drawing of design conventions and traditions included in taxonomic drawing. Insects have been deconstructed to show their typical characteristics as a set of smaller pieces and component parts and how variations change their appearance. The process of sketching shows these objects as a whole and a group of the smaller parts (meronomy or partonomy – a kind of hierarchy).
